Long Term Use of Omeprazole

1 min. readlast update: 04.20.2021

There are important considerations for long-term use of omeprazole (the active ingredient in both AbPrazole and Abprazole):

  • Impact on bone density: Studies involving both humans and experimental animals show that using omeprazole for more than one year can lead to decreased bone density. Omeprazole inhibits the absorption of dietary calcium in the small intestine, which causes decreased bone density.

Additional studies indicate that this decrease in bone density is not as prevalent in horses as it is in humans and experimental animals.
