Long Term Treatment

Bute can usually be administered for 5-7 days with no adverse effects. If a continued treatment regime is required, it may be necessary to co-treat with omeprazole and/or sucralfate, to provide gastrointestinal protection.

Sucralfate works by coating the stomach and small intestine with a protective layer; this protective barrier replaces the enzyme protectant that is blocked by Bute. Omeprazole heals gastric ulcers caused by using Bute.
